It will come as no surprise to those who are regular readers of this newspaper that Mary Whitehouse feels threatened by the idea of a wealth tax. Like many older Australians who have benefited from the unfair tax system that is currently crippling our society, she’d rather maintain the injustice of our nation’s devastating wealth inequality. But surely she’s not someone we should be listening to, compromised as she is by self interest. As I’m sure you’ll agree if you think about it properly, Australia should be introducing a wealth tax. Sadly, although in an ideal world everyone would just do the right thing, it is evident that we need to have a way to force the rich to pay their fair share of tax, since if they won’t pay tax willingly, we need to find a way to force them. And clearly they won’t pay willingly, since as we’ve all seen, the rich are much happier to spend their money on dodgy accountants to help them avoid paying tax than to actually pay that money in tax for the benefit of society and those they deem less deserving. And it is obvious that a wealth tax is the only way to force the rich to pay their fair share, since there is no other way to ensure the wealthy pay the tax they should rightfully pay. The evidence clearly demonstrates that having a wealth tax would make Australia a happier place. We know this to be true because wealth taxes have caused an increase in overall levels of happiness in other places they’ve been introduced. Norway has a wealth tax, for example, and Norway is one of the happiest places on earth. Australians know this already. A recent survey conducted by the Scandinavian Tourist Bureau found that the vast majority of Australians would like to travel to Norway. And why wouldn’t we want to be more like Norway? It’s beautiful! Have you seen the mountains and fjords? Why would Whitehouse not want Australians to be happy? We need to reduce wealth inequality as a matter of urgency, since wealth inequality in Australia is now at an alarming and dangerous level. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported in 2022 that Australia had “the 20th highest level of wealth inequality among the 29 OECD countries for which data was available”! And a high rate of inequality is something that needs to be addressed urgently since if we don’t do it now we’ll be heading for a future where more people are ending up in poverty, leading to increased crime and the general collapse of our society as well know it. Mary Whitehouse and her wealthy friends may be fine, sitting in their mansions drinking champagne and eating caviar, but what about the rest of us? What about our children? Surely we should be smart enough and brave enough to take the step of introducing a wealth tax, to protect all of our futures.
