Our great town of Cobar has fallen on hard times. Beset by challenges of climate change, brownouts, and economic crisis, things have been looking bleak. But recent news sparks great hopes for decent folks of our great town, a new dawn looks like it could be just over the horizon. The chance for a new building project that will bring in jobs and clean energy. But some nasty naysayers look like they are out to ruin the party and throw away this wonderful opportunity. So I, and other fair-minded true-blue decent folk, are here to tell you: don’t listen to the nasty naysayers, say “yes” to the Cobar Nuclear Power Station deal. The Australian Government are looking for a place to help tackle climate change and move away from fossil fuels to meet growing energy needs. And they are considering Cobar as the place for a brand new, state of the art nuclear power station. And there are so many reasons we should build it here. First and foremost, it is what local people want. A recent survey by the well-respected and non-partisan Radiant Energy Group found overwhelming support for the project with 46% of people positively supporting nuclear energy. And who would be the charlatan to stand in the way of the overwhelming will of the people? Not I, surely not you. Surely this, in and of itself, is enough to go ahead, but there are further excellent reasons we should do this. Despite what some hippies might say, nuclear energy is an environmentally friendly choice. As Peter Dutton has said, it’s clean, cheap, and reliable. We find ourselves faced with a choice between maintaining outdated, dirty, coal and gas production or switching to state-of-the-art nuclear generation; and it is clear to anyone who thinks about this sensibly that one of these is obviously the wrong choice. Coal and gas emissions are terrible for the environment, polluting our air and causing climate change. And we should all be doing what we can to reduce climate change – we’ve all seen the impact of an increasing number of extreme weather events in recent years. And while nuclear energy has absolutely miniscule emissions – 1 kilo of Uranium produces a mere 3000 kilograms of emissionsthe independent IAEA have shown that dirty coal and gas emissions are absolutely devastating, creating nearly three hundred times as much deadly toxic gases to produce the same amount of energy. Tonnes and tonnes of noxious fumes pouring out into the skies ruining not just our lives but those of our children, and our children’s children. Also, it saddens me to say this, but we must acknowledge that our great town has fallen on hard times in recent years, with many folks unable to find work, to buy homes. First COVID, now the bloody cost-of-living crisis. Decent folk need a break. We all know of someone who is doing it tough. But there is hope here. The recent Aukus deal shows that building nuclear energy creates jobs. A report by 9news showed that 20,000 new jobs were created by this deal. Think of what that could do for us here in Cobar? If we build the power plant locally, then this will create jobs for local people. Not only the building but also the running of the power plant. Why would anyone be against getting local folks a decent wage? Lastly, the hippies always go on and on about nuclear power being dangerous. But let’s be serious here for a minute. The only people trying to tell us what to do in our own town don’t really care about you or I. They don’t live here in Cobar. So, they don’t care about local people. They are lying to us, and it would be utter foolishness to listen to them and give in to their craven demands. No, the truth is that it would be safe to build a nuclear power station here in Cobar for a number of reasons. Great advances have been made in industry standards to make nuclear power safe. Hippies always go on and on about Cherrnobbly, or whatever it is called, but that was dodgy commies last century! If we build a power station here in Cobar – Indeed, when we build it here, it will be Australian made. And Australia is safe. Our engineers and scientists are the very best. Australia is geologically inert, no tidal waves or earthquakes. Australia is politically peaceful, no threats of loony terrorists. Australia is the best country in the world, the envy of other nations. We are the lucky country, and it would be truly, despicably un-Australian to block progress for us here in Cobar in leading the way to a clean energy future. One that creates jobs for families and protects our kids and grandkids for generations to come. Let’s build the power plant: let’s harness nuclear energy for a brighter future here in Cobar. Thank you.
